This is a beautiful reproduction French Savonnerie rug hand-knotted using 100% New Zealand wool on cotton foundation. It was done exactly as it was centuries ago in France. Thick and plush wool pile. The wool material is excellent for stain resistance and a lifetime of enjoyment. This collection takes its inspiration from the ornamental carpets produced in 17th Century Paris by the prestigious Savonnerie Manufactory. Made popular by King Louis XIII, Savonneries became the carpet of choice for the French crown thereafter. These pile rugs are fine in texture and display decorative floral designs adorned with playful elements such as leafy motifs, baskets, ribbons and medallions.
About French Savonnerie rugs
The Savonnerie workshops were set up in Paris by Pierre DuPont in 1628 with supervision of Henry IV. Savonnerie rugs were mainly woven for palaces by special orders. These designs were produced under the direction of artists of the royal courts. These designs produced under the direction of artists of the royal courts consisted of naturalistic floral motifs, coats of arms and heraldic devices and some architectural motifs. Many rugs echoed the elegant ceilings of the rooms for which they were commissioned. The greatest period for Savonnerie rugs was between 1650 and 1789. A French Savonnerie rug is a perfect companion for rooms with European or Traditional furnishing and decor.
